The Power of Complementary Colors

This lesson contains some of the most useful and exciting material we'll cover.  It pertains to the remarkable relationship between colors opposite each other on the color wheel - called Complements because they are said to 'complete - or enhance each other'.

The painting on the left is done in just two colors, and neither one of them is gray or black.  Can you guess what they are?

Both of these paintings were done using only Prussian Blue and Cadmium Red - colors that are very nearly opposite each other on the color wheel.  In school we were taught that red and blue make purple, but this hot red and warm blue make many fascinating grays and browns.  In the painting on the right you can see pure Prussian Blue in the dark waves, and pure Cadmium Red in the signature in the lower right hand corner.  Everything else is the result of mixing these two colors.
