Tina Ragatz

Tina is new to watercolor but she's taking to it quickly.  She finds it relaxing and yet stimulating at the same time.

She is drawn to landscape, and the painting she's working on here is of Bodega Head as seen from about a quarter mile offshore.  She doesn't like it yet, but I see a lot of promise in it.

She hasn't taken a traditional watercolor class so no one's told her not to use black or white.  She has both in her pallet and here she's used some black  to create the grays and to shade the color slightly.

The finished painting has a nice glow and a warm feeling to it.

Shades (colors mixed with black) and Tints (colors mixed with white) are shunned by many watercolorists who don't know how beautiful they can be.  Watercolor teachers often advise students to avoid these mixtures, depriving them of the opportunity to experiment and try these techniques for themselves.  Anyone serious about painting would do well to keep their options open and not limit themselves by buying into the so-called 'traditional wisdom' regarding color mixing.

The four images below are three views of the same painting.  The first is the full painting, and the next three are the painting cropped in various ways to study the composition.  Which one do you like best?.

This desert painting is still in progress, but I like the start a lot.

Tina's also working on a water painting using similar colors.
