RYLEIGH AND SAM

The pictures below will give you a glimpse of some of the wonderful things that happen when children and art come together in a unique learning experience that teaches the 'teacher' as much as it teaches the 'kids.'  The place is my studio, sometimes presided over by the 'studio cat' Cisco.

Ryleigh and Sam Norgrove

Sam  - Age 3

Sam has the attention span of a normal three year old so we keep the lesson part short and concentrate on letting him get the feel of the materials.  His first painting was all dry brush and very little of that.  Like any kid he instinctively held the brush like a dagger and used it in a 'scrubbing' motion.  You could almost hear the bristles screaming.

Ryleigh - Age 5

Ryleigh likes to paint more realistically and to tell stories.  She picked up a 'feel' for the water/paint ratio very quickly and was not too hard on the brushes.

This is a painting of the whole family.

By the second day he was learning how to add water to get more coverage,  He was still a little hard on the brush but getting better.

Ryleigh likes to draw with a pencil and then go to the paints.  She can work from imagination and in this painting of six houses the littlest one is 'sometimes picked on'  by it's bigger neighbors.

The third day he was covering the paper and the results were amazing.  He likes to watch the colors mix together and to experiment with all the various combinations.  He is much more gentle on the equipment and is more patient and thoughtful in his approach.

Today we listened to Peter and the Wolf. with Itzhak Perlman and Zubin Mehta.  Ryleigh wanted to learn to draw a wolf so we worked on some drawing skills.  The first try we didn't leave enough room for his tail and he had round ears like Mickey Mouse.  On the second try we centered him better horizontally but forgot to leave enough room for his legs at the bottom.

What can we say but "Wow!"  A lot of adults (me included) would be proud of this one.

In the final iteration he even has teeth!  He is in the garden looking for the duck (pictured below) but of course by the time he got there the duck was already in the tummy (temporarily) of the cat (not pictured.)

The kids are having a great time - and the teacher is too!  Pretty soon I'll want to take down all my own paintings from the studio walls and put up theirs.  I should have so much imagination and spirit in my work!  I never ceased to be amazed and inspired by the wonderful things that come out of young minds.
