The following links will take you to pages describing some of the material we'll cover
Classes are held at my home studio in Sebastopol, where I can accommodate up to four people
Scheduling is very flexible.

Getting Acquainted with your Tools and Materials
This class will introduce you to the variety of equipment and supplies available, and will help you select the right brushes, paper, and paint, to get you going and keep you excited about the journey.  The page also contains links to Cheap Joe's Art Stuff website where you can get information about products and/or place an order.

Getting Started
This class deals with the moment of truth, when we all come face to face with that scary sheet of blank paper!  We'll learn how to tame it with a wash of color that reduces the glare and makes it a lot less intimidating.

Washes and More Washes
Starting with more of the single color background washes we did last week, we'll go on to graded washes and washing smaller areas within the larger picture.

Three Ways of Mixing Color
Watercolors can be mixed in three very different ways.  In school you probably learned how to mix colors together in the pallet.  This class will teach you two other ways to mix color with very different results.  Glazing and Granulation will become words of your painting vocabulary, and you'll learn how to look at a painting and know which technique was used.  This is exciting stuff!

The Power of Complementary Colors
Remember the Color Wheel?  Colors opposite each other on the wheel have an amazing relationship to each other, and knowing how they relate is one of the most useful concepts in painting.  You'll learn how to position compliments to create jarring visual tension in one painting, and how to mix them into the softest and richest grays and shadows in another.

Creating Light
Picasso said, "The painter creates light by adding dark," and it's as simple as that.  The problem is most watercolorists don't go dark enough, and the result is a little bland and a lot boring.

Making Friends with Mud
A short course on color temperature, painting our way out of muddy colors and making our paintings glow again!

Designing for Success
A catch-all class on various other useful concepts.

Getting Down to Detail - and Knowing When to Stop!
A class on finishing touches and that all-important question, "How do I know when to stop?"
Classes will be about two and a half hours long, beginning with an introduction and a demonstration of technique.  Then we'll paint for while, with an occasional break for comments and explanations.  The class usually ends with a short critique and discussion.  I usually allow plenty of time after the formal class period for anyone who wishes to continue painting or discussion a little longer.

Cost is $18.00 per class on an individual basis
or $16.50 each for group of two or more

IF you need to purchase materials and/or equipment, we'll discuss that at the first class and make a list that fits your budget.  In the mean time you can use my brushes.  If you need paper and paint I can supply it at my cost.

Please call (707) 829-2179 or E-MAIL if you have questions or wish to start classes
